Evie Milne

By Casey Gabriel

This year Lincolns introduced a new Internship program. The program is for students studying accounting at university wanting some experience in public practice. For the duration of their study interns will work part time with Lincolns and get a taste of all the areas of the office including reception, client support, bookkeeping, audit, super and tax. The goal of the internship is that our interns will complete their degree with the experience to jump straight into the corporate world at Lincolns and along the way, potentially, earn a couple of credits towards their degree!

Evie Milne is our lucky first intern. She has only been with us 3 months, but we caught up with her to find out how it is all going so far…

Tell us about yourself Evie and what drew you to accounting?

I grew up on a farm, I love animals and my first career goal was actually to be a vet. I changed my mind about this as I got older and following school, I headed to Perth to study Molecular Biology and Genetics and Biomedical Science. I really loved what I was studying, however as much as I loved it, I soon discovered that living in the city was not for me and I also couldn’t see my degree resulting in a career for me. I have always liked numbers, I spent years asking my mum to let me help out with the farm books. After I moved back to the farm, I decided that accounting was where I saw myself heading.

What drew you to the idea of doing an internship while studying?

I’m someone who learns best by doing so entering an internship program alongside my study seemed like a good fit for me. I also really like the idea of knowing what is coming at the end of my degree.

What areas of Lincolns have you explored so far?

So far, I’ve worked in reception, bookkeeping, been introduced to some tax work and have been helping the CSA’s with various tasks (CSAs are our Client Support Administrators). Although I haven’t been here very long, I am enjoying getting experience in the various areas of the firm as I like variety in my work.

So far, what have been both the positives and the challenges (if any) of the program?

I love that I am getting industry experience whilst studying so that I somewhat know what I can expect from my career at the end of my degree. Working in an accounting firm while I am studying also means that if I require help with my studies, or help understanding anything, there are lots of people around that I can ask for help.

Working in an office environment for the first time, especially one with so many people, has really helped me develop better communication skills, and increased my confidence in talking to different people.

By far the biggest challenge is juggling work and study, while also trying to find enough time to spend with my beloved horses!

So, from your experience so far would you recommend commencing an internship to other students?

Yes! For the reasons above, I think it is a great experience for students to work in their chosen career area while they study.

What are your plans for the future (aside from continuing to work with the awesome Lincolns team of course)?

I would really like to get back into competitive horse riding when I get the time, but apart from that I haven’t given it much thought. I want to be open to the opportunities that come my way.
